About

I am a river restoration engineer with nearly 40 years of experience in the planning, design, and implementation of stream and wetland restoration projects.

My work has been focused on developing practical, field-tested approaches to river reconstruction that maximizes ecosystem habitat recovery across a wide range of systems and project types.

Current Work

I currently serve as the senior technical advisor on river reestablishment supporting the Hurricane Helene recovery efforts for the North Carolina Department of Transportation. This effort involves major infrastructure reconstruction along the Pigeon, Cane, Toe, Nolichucky and Broad River corridors where I am advising the Department and design-build teams on how to integrate river rehabilitation and stabilization into large-scale roadway and bridge projects.

In addition, I provide consulting support to engineering firms, mitigation bankers and restoration practitioners, including design review, conceptual development, site assessments and mentoring of design teams.

Approach

My goal is to engage on key stages of a project where experienced input can have the greatest impact—early concept development, design review, and construction-phase advising.

I focus on approaches that perform in the field, drawing on experience with a wide range of geomorphic and geologic settings, habitat requirements, and project constraints.

Background

Prior to establishing my consulting practice, I served as the Natural Systems Discipline Lead with Stantec, one of the largest engineering firms in the world, where I led and contributed to a wide range of river restoration projects and helped develop standards of practice.
